Sheet vinyl is resilient flooring supplied from a roll and cut for the room. Cushion vinyl is a sheet-vinyl construction with a cushioned backing or layer. Domestic and commercial products vary, so the exact use classification, width, surface, slip data, backing, preparation and installation method must govern the choice.
Roll width and seams
The available width and room dimensions determine whether a single piece can work. Large, connected or unusually shaped areas may need a planned seam and installer review.
Water and slip guidance
Do not assume every vinyl is waterproof or slip resistant. Check the exact product, installation, joins, perimeter, maintenance and test information.
Preparation first
Sheet vinyl follows the surface beneath it. Unevenness, contamination, movement or moisture can show through or affect the installation.

Bathrooms
Use only a product and installation approved for the area. Water can still reach edges, seams, penetrations or the subfloor; sheet vinyl does not waterproof the room.
Kitchens and utility rooms
Consider spills, appliances, heat, cleaning, indentation and entrances. Check the exact surface, use classification and installation guidance.
Rental and family homes
Easy cleaning can be valuable, but wear, indentation, staining and repair expectations vary. Choose evidence for the expected use rather than price or pattern alone.
Commercial spaces
Confirm use class, slip data, wear specification, installation, seam treatment, maintenance and warranty for the activity and traffic. Domestic vinyl must not be assumed commercial.
Slip resistance and moisture
Use the exact test data and installation specification.
Slip resistance is product- and condition-specific. A textured appearance, cushion backing or the word vinyl does not prove a particular result. Check verified test information for the intended domestic or commercial setting.
Sheet vinyl can resist water at its surface where the product says so, but moisture below the floor is a separate risk. The subfloor, damp evidence, adhesive, seams, edges and penetrations must be assessed.
Also confirm roll width, overall construction, backing, wear information, acoustic guidance, cleaning method and warranty for the selected design.
Preparation and installation
A smooth sheet-vinyl finish starts below the flooring.
Assess the base
Confirm substrate type, flatness, stability, condition and moisture risk. Existing coverings, contamination, cracks or movement can change the preparation plan.
Smoothing compound
A compatible primer and smoothing compound may be required to prevent defects showing through. Product choice and depth depend on the substrate and verified site conditions.
Plan seams and direction
Where the room exceeds the available width or layout allows no single-piece cut, seam position, pattern direction and material use require a deliberate cutting plan.
Use the specified fitting method
Loose-lay, perimeter-secured, fully bonded or specialist commercial methods must follow the exact product and project specification. Do not substitute a generic adhesive rule.

Measure maximum dimensions
Record the furthest length and width, including alcoves and door areas. Keep separate rooms and unusual sections identifiable.
Open the chosen product
Select the available width and use its calculator where provided. It applies the governed width and cutting logic rather than a generic square-metre estimate.
Confirm seams and fitting
Joins, connected rooms, direction, awkward shapes and commercial details need installer review before the final cut is ordered.
Cleaning, lifespan and local service
Protect the surface and the installation beneath it.
Remove grit, use suitable entrance protection and furniture feet, clean spills promptly and follow the exact manufacturer instructions. Avoid unsupported chemicals, abrasive methods, steam or flooding.
There is no responsible universal lifespan for sheet vinyl. Product construction, traffic, preparation, fitting, seams, moisture and maintenance all influence performance and warranty.

How is sheet vinyl sold?
Sheet vinyl is normally cut to the required size from a roll. Once cut it may be non-returnable unless faulty or supplied incorrectly.
Will the subfloor show through?
It can. Sheet vinyl usually needs a smooth, dry and stable surface because imperfections may show in the finished floor.
